Edible Seeds

August is the month when many plants, especially annuals, start ensuring their propagation, and also the time when gardeners hijack this process by harvesting the seeds for their own use.

The variety of seed types and shapes is almost limitless, a testament to the infinite complexity of nature, and they comprise a significant portion of our diet. Seeds are staple foods we wouldn’t want to be without.

We’re all familiar with the classic grains, legumes and spices, like cereals, peas, beans, peppercorns and cloves, but as our eating habits change, more seeds join the menu, seeds like flax and amaranth, bread nut, sesame and buckwheat, chia, quinoa, ground nuts and hemp.

Speaking of nuts, we tend to put them in a separate category, based on their size, rather than their function, but nuts are seeds as well. Walnuts, chestnuts, pecans, hazelnuts and almond trees don’t produce them to feed us.

Last, but certainly not least, for all the mocha lovers out there, I’d like to remind everybody delicious coffee and cocoa beans are seeds as well.
