Spikes

Who says prickly weeds can’t be beautiful?

Of course milk thistle is not just a pretty face, it is a recognized medicinal plant. Its active ingredient, silymarin, is hepatoprotective, antiviral, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and supports the function of the liver and heart.

Thistle is related to the artichoke and all its parts are edible, although some thistle varieties may not be very palatable.

Folk tales claim this old plant was blessed by the Virgin herself, and represents resilience in the face of adversity, determination, courage and strength.

It is often used to symbolize protection.

Thistle flowers are exquisite, but the vicious thorns are so unforgiving I can’t bring myself to plant it in the garden, so I content myself with appreciating its beauty in its natural habitat and from a safe distance.
