The Green Pharmacy
Building a green pharmacy is serious business and needs the proper tools and supplies to succeed.
The aspiring home herbalist will need:
– brown apothecary bottles of various sizes, with and without droppers, for tinctures, hydrosols and infused oils.
– brown paper bags for storing dried plant material
– labels for everything. All labels must specify the ingredients and the time of processing; green preparations have rather short shelf lives.
– a cool dry place for storage, away from the reach of children
– measuring cups and spoons and a precise scale
– a double boiler reserved specifically for herbal preparations
– a mortar and pestle or a coffee grinder used only for processing herbs
– oil, wax and lanolin for salves and creams
– a hand blender for same, mixing by hand doesn’t yield adequate emulsion quality
– drying racks with wire bottoms for good air flow
– wooden spoons, knives, strainers, funnels, jars
– cotton towel
