February Pampering

There is nothing particularly attractive about February, the weather is dreadful and summer is way off in the distance. It’s too soon to start planting, even indoors, and the garden looks like a wet hamster shivering in the frozen rain.

Since the outdoors offer nothing at this time of year why not make February the month of overindulgent pampering? A regimen of fruits and vegetables to nourish your body, healthful home made beauty masks to brighten your skin, relaxing herbal teas and fruited honey to lighten your spirit.

Mix a couple of tablespoons of kaolin clay with one egg yolk, a tablespoon of lemon juice and a quarter cup of honey for a cleansing and pore reducing mask. Or try to relax with cucumber slices over your eyes, yes this facial treatment actually exists, it is not one of those things that only happen in motion pictures. It works wonders on tired eyes with dark circles and will make you feel like a forties’ movie star at the same time.

Simmer a pot of chamomile tea (from your garden, of course) for an ad-hoc facial/aromatherapy. Grab some potted bulbs (better if fragrant), and play favorite music to brighten your day, believe me February needs all the help it can get.

Today the temperature was in the low thirties, with a cutting wind and a leaden sky. Non poetic flurries whipped around in the blustery weather, turning from icy rain to sleet. Everything is gray, or brown, or grayish brown, and looks positively dead. I know it’s not, but it sure looks it.

So, please, for the sake of sanity, lay your chore list down, forget where you placed it and bring some enjoyable activities to replace it, at least for a few more weeks until the little seedlings of your newly started plants develop.

If there is one thing to appreciate during this late month of winter, it’s that it is the best season for citrus fruit, so squeeze a fresh glass of juice and toast it to your health!
