The Dead of Winter

The beginning of February used to mark the midpoint of winter, and I so wish that were still true!

The cold season starting close to Christmas, almost a month later than it used to, puts February squarely in the dead of winter now, and that comes with all the challenges this dreary season has in store.

The recent blizzard was proof of that, and there will be more to follow, I’m sure. It is only in February that winter is showing its true face, with bone chilling temperatures, snow storms and frozen landscapes.

Not much activity for a gardener in February, other than starting seeds, for which it’s still two weeks too early.

I’m not even sure about the days getting longer. The winter solstice was a month and a half ago and it’s still getting dark at five.
