the understory

Early April is a critical time for the understory, which gets a head start in the sunshine before the large trees leaf out.

Forests turn green from the ground up, starting with the lowest layer, sheltered in the warm air next to the ground and encouraged by the abundant sunshine unavailable later in the year.

The mosses come to life first, slowly advancing up the tree trunks and boughs before the leaves appear on the branches.

They are followed by the emergence of woodland perennials and mushrooms.

Next, the shrubs and small trees under the canopy leaf out, a couple of weeks before the large ones, to ensure their energy stores for the low light conditions of summer.

Last, the tall trees grow leaves, just in time for their canopy to protect the shade loving understory from excessive heat and drought.

The forest is a beautiful family story.
