pumpkins, squashes and gourds

What would fall be without pumpkins, squashes and gourds? This year I learned, to my surprise, that if you leave the squashes on the vine too long, they’ll turn into gourds too.

I don’t have a lot of room for vegetables, and squashes are notoriously sprawling plants, but I still plant a few nests every year, because I like their flowers. Even the compact varieties take up more than their share of space, and crowd their neighbors with their overabundant foliage.

One year I got the idea to plant them in containers. Don’t waste your time, they’d probably be more likely to sprout in wet cement! Or maybe it just wasn’t their year, plants are very peculiar about weather conditions, sensitive to the slightest variations in temperature and humidity.

Next to the the dried-up stems of this years cucurbit sampling, (yes, they already retired for the winter), the tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are still pushing out blooms, which shakes up a bit my firm
